Extracting an object or person from it’s background
Here we explore the many methods of extracting an Image from it's background or highlighting the image by using DOF and other methods. Make your main subject stand out and even place it in a pleasant background. Some extractions are relatively easy, some quite difficult (such as wispy hair).

27. Better results with Extraction.
Missing a few chunks of your proposed selection after doing an extraction? Try duplicating the layer a few times and you’ll see wonderful improvements to the edges. Then merge these layers for your final result. I learned this technique at PhotoshopWorld East Miami.

These may help. They address a technique called "channel masks" for making difficult selections.

Be forewarned: If a selection is difficult, there's usually no quick and easy way to mask it. But in some cases a channel mask will reduce the overall pain and increase the final results.
